My name is not Emma

Yours could be Michael, Mo, D, or just J. All these new names are your new, long or short (unfortunately even accepted by yourself) version of your new name, as many will never be able to say your actual name. It’s so strange, that something so simple cannot be said correctly.

Despite the many public and private articles, governments, agencies and so on, promoting the idea of globalization, despite the internet and the entire world within accessible reach, it is strange that in this day and age, with everything so easy and learnable, with everything with so little effort, a majority in the western hemisphere, let’s not forget the eastern hemisphere, cannot say my name according to my birth name. I would like my name to be called, as it actual is.

So I have to pretend, and sometimes, it’s not because they cannot just pronounce my name, but if they do, 9/11 would have to come up somehow, although I was not even born at that particular time or have never even been to that particular place and I have no connection to whoever did it.

Portraying and implementing a “global village” surely must come with a little education in at least pronunciation of someone’s name.  The earth can never be claimed as small, when one is insulted in the first introductory instance. What is even more annoying is the fact that some cannot even get the name of the British Prime minister right, and if the President of the United States can’t do that, then what hope do we have with the rest of the people.

It is an insult to your claimed intelligence…

Many people need to be reeducated. Education needs a revamp; students in those hemispheres need to know the rest of the world. They need to know where Bahrain is, Qatar is, Kuwait is, Egypt is, Lebanon is, Syria is, Palestine is, Ethiopia is, Kenya is, Turkey is..etc etc and not just know a few. With the truth please, because I as an Arab, Hijab wearing Muslim, who is following her faith, has never hurt a fly.

Many people need a name education, especially if they intend to be diplomats. You can’t call Rashid .. Rasheed.. Because he is not Rasheed. He is Rashid. You cannot call Muhammad .. Mo Ham id… because he is not Mo Ham id.

Another thing which is worse, are people that have lived in our hemisphere and two or three decades later, still cannot get my simple name right. They call me R I M........ Like the rim of a wheel.. My name is pretty simple... REEM.

I have never got Elizabeth, or Henry, or Jonathon, or Harry, or Edmund, or Edward, or Shelly, or Donald, or Boris, or whatever wrong..

Kindly extend the same courtesy, because I am one of many, who have decided to never travel to those hemispheres as we are tired of being Emma.
